Research findings and media reports can be at odds with one another, so too can research from different studies. As a result, the role of nutrition in relation to chronic disease and overall health is often perceived as inconsistent by the public and by health professionals. Effective knowledge translation needs to be emphasized to facilitate uptake of evidence-based information by the media, public and knowledge users. A second challenge is improving the reproducibility and rigor of nutrition research. New tools and technologies in dietary assessment such as a web-based dietary assessment tool provide opportunities to strengthen nutrition research. Approaches to improve these fundamental areas are critical for increasing confidence in nutrition science, providing information needed for the public to adopt a healthy diet, and moving the field forward.
About the Speakers:
Sharon Kirkpatrick, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo
Dr. Sharon Kirkpatrick leads a public health nutrition research program based at the School of Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo. Her research primarily focuses on understanding dietary patterns in populations and influences on these patterns, using a systems thinking lens to consider the array of factors at play. Much of her work is aimed at improving methodologies for measuring diet to foster a more robust evidence base on the influence of diet on health and the impact of interventions on diet. She has been instrumental in creating freely-available and highly-accessed resources for researchers, including an online dietary assessment primer and a web-based dietary assessment tool. Dr. Kirkpatrick also has longstanding interests in food access among marginalized populations. In 2014, she was one of eight recipients nationally of a Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute Capacity Development Award, which supports early researchers with potential for high impact. She is among 2017's Highly Cited Researchers and has received two Awards of Merit from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and an Outstanding Performance Award from the University of Waterloo. Dr. Kirkpatrick holds a PhD in Nutritional Sciences and Master of Health Science in Community Nutrition from the University of Toronto
Sophie Desroches, PhD, RD, Associate Professor, Université Laval
Dr. Sophie Desroches, PhD, RD, is an Associate Professor at the School of Nutrition of Laval University, in Quebec City. She is also a research scientist at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods of Laval University. Her research program aims to identify, develop and evaluate knowledge translation strategies that will optimize adherence to dietary advice. She is the lead author of the Cochrane systematic review “Interventions for enhancing adherence to dietary advice for preventing and managing chronic diseases". Her more recently funded research projects have explored shared decision making in nutrition counseling, and the use of social media, and more specifically blogs, as knowledge translation strategies to enhance adherence to evidence-based dietary advice for preventing and managing chronic diseases.
