Speaker: Julie M. Parrott, MS, RD
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases world-wide. Out of the G7 countries*, the United States has the greatest number (11%) of people diagnosed with diabetes. Canada has the second highest rate (8%).
We know that diabetes can cause serious health issues if not treated. In fact, about 2 out of every 5 Americans are expected to develop Type 2 Diabetes in their lifetime. In Canada, a new diagnosis of Diabetes occurs every 3 minutes. In prediabetes, blood sugars are elevated but not enough to be diagnosed as diabetes (i.e. a fasting plasma glucose level of 7.0 mmol/L or higher or between 100-125 mg/dL). Prediabetes occurs in more than 1 out of 3 adults with upwards of 90% unaware of its presence. Detecting and intervening at the prediabetes stage can decrease the risk of developing type 2 Diabetes by almost 60%. Thus, a key public health effort is to intervene before the development of diabetes when excess blood sugar in the bloodstream can cause severe and irreversible damage.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe two of the program components provided by the Diabetes Prevention Program.
- Recall one of the reasons that the Diabetes Prevention Program was initiated in the United States.
- Identify one of the “lessons learned" and how this lesson might apply to their particular practice.
*Group of 7 (G7), informal bloc of 7 industrialized, democratic nations with the most advanced economies.
