In 2019, the APNM Nutrition Translation Award was awarded to three winning submissions on the theme of “Nutrition for Mental Health". This free CNS Webinar will feature these three presentation topics: 1) Nutrition interventions in populations with mental health conditions; 2) Treatment-related weight gain and metabolic complications in children with mental health disorders: Potential role for lifestyle interventions; and 3) Healthy Brain, Healthy Life: The Effects of Diet and Exercise.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Stephana Cherak: "Nutrition interventions in populations with mental health conditions"

What is the extent, range, and nature of research evidence on nutrition interventions for mental disorders?

  1. What are recommendations for future research?
  2. What are implications for current clinical practice?

Alejandra Wiedeman: "Treatment-related weight gain and metabolic complications in children with mental health disorders: Potential role for lifestyle interventions"

  1. Differentiate the metabolic complications in children with mental health disorders treated with second-generation antipsychotics
  2. Discuss the dietary intakes and physical activity data from children with mental health disorders
  3. Understand the potential role of lifestyle interventions on metabolic complications in children with mental health disorders

Bradley Baranowski: "Healthy Brain, Healthy Life: The Effects of Diet and Exercise"

Gain an understanding of:

  1. Alzheimer's as a metabolic disorder
  2. The negative effects of an obesogenic diet
  3. The beneficial effects of exercise and a healthy diet

About the speakers:

Stephana Cherak is a PhD Candidate in Psychiatric Epidemiology in the Departments of Community Health Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Calgary. Stephana received her BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Calgary and her MSc in Pharmacology from the University of Alberta. Her research uses methods in patient and family-centered critical care. Her current work examines the role of family in caring for the critically ill. Stephana is also involved in the Fundamentals of Epidemiology and Advanced Epidemiology courses in the Department of Community Health Sciences graduate program.

Dr Alejandra Wiedeman is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pediatrics at UBC under the supervision of Dr Angela Devlin. She completed her PhD in 2018 in Human Nutrition at UBC under the supervision of Dr Sheila Innis. Her PhD research was focused on the nutritional assessment of choline. Prior to moving to Vancouver, Alejandra completed her BSc and MSc degrees at the Universidad de Valparaiso and Universidad de Chile, both in Chile. She is also a registered dietitian in Chile. Her current postdoctoral research involves studies assessing dietary intake, nutritional status, and cardiometabolic risk factors in children and youth.

Bradley Baranowski is a PhD candidate at Brock University in the department of Health Sciences. His research focuses on brain metabolism, specifically, understanding Alzheimer's Disease as a metabolic disorder. His lab examines how particular interventions influences (ex. Poor diet and sedentary behaviour) or mitigates (ex. Healthy diet and exercise) the risk and progression of Alzheimer's Disease by studying alterations in associated metabolic pathways. His work narrows in on understanding the mechanisms behind the beneficial effects of exercise on Alzheimer's Disease in hopes to use these mediators as a therapeutic therapy.
