In the smart and highly connected world in which we live, social media offers a promising setting to transfer nutrition knowledge and provide patients and consumers with the strategies and the support they need to adopt healthy dietary behaviours. Part one of this webinar will present a map of the current scientific evidence on the uses, users, and impacts of social media in dietetic practice, show findings from a randomized controlled trial assessing the impact of using a healthy eating blog as a knowledge translation tool on dietary behaviours of French-Canadian women. Part two of the webinar will focus on the use of twitter as a powerful communications medium for nutrition researchers. Tips and strategies for the effective use of twitter, its benefits, including how it can influence your career will be provided in a way to inform both experienced and non-experienced Twitter users.

  1. Define social media and acknowledge their potential as knowledge translation tools to promote healthy eating.
  2. Understand the current state of evidence on social media in nutrition - including who are the users and what are the uses, the impacts and the barriers/facilitators of the use of social media in nutrition - and the evidence gaps to be filed with future research.
  3. Develop effective strategies for using Twitter to promote nutrition research.

About the Speakers

Dr. Annie Lapointe, RD, PhD, Université de Laval

Dr. Annie Lapointe, RD, PhD, is a research coordinator at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods at Université Laval in Quebec City. She has worked in Dr. Sophie Desroches' research lab for the past eight years. She holds expertise in Knowledge syntheses and has coordinated systematic reviews including a Cochrane systematic review, rapid reviews, scoping reviews, and environmental scans. Dr Lapointe has also been a trainer for Cochrane Canada for which she participated to several systematic reviews training sessions for graduate students, research coordinators, and professors.

Dylan Mackay, PhD, University of Manitoba

Dylan MacKay is a nutritional biochemist who specializes in human clinical trials and inter-individual variability. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences and a Clinical Trialist at the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation, at the University of Manitoba. His research focuses on lifestyle and chronic disease risk . He is also very interested in combating nutritional misinformation, especially on the internet and social media
