Session Description:
Virtual visits have become a new way of practicing for many dietitians and allied health professionals during this COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. It is be approached with both excitement and caution. This session will provide an overview of the key concepts of the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and how to conduct a virtual SGA to obtain reliable results. Attendees will also learn how to develop a template, including a script, to guide them in performing a SGA virtually.
Speaker Bios:
Kari McKnight, RD has been a registered dietitian for nearly two decades and is currently the Internship Lead - Preceptor and Academic Liaison at Alberta Health Services, supporting dietitians and preceptors in their roles in training future dietitians. Prior to her current role, Kari held a dual role in a clinical setting working with hemodialysis patients, as well as a provincial role as a Practice Lead for the renal dietitian team. Her passion includes the role of the dietitian in the identification and treatment of protein-energy wasting, particularly in hemodialysis patients. She has also done numerous talks on subjective global assessment and nutrition-focused physical exam.
Manon Laporte, RD, MSc is a clinical dietitian at the Réseau de santé Vitalité Health Network, NB and addresses the issue of malnutrition in adult patients on a daily basis. In the past 25 years, Manon has been involved in different research projects and peer-reviewed publications related to malnutrition screening and assessment and has been an invited speaker on these topics. Manon is one of the founding members of the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force (CMTF), was a co-investigator for the Nutrition Care in Canadian Hospital and More-2-Eat phase 1 studies and led the study on the development and validation of the Canadian Nutrition Screening Tool. Manon has participated in the development of the CMTF Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) education package, provides training and is a co-author of a recent paper on using the SGA to diagnose malnutrition and to help to distinguish from other wasting conditions.
